The explosive loading coefficient of tungsten alloy armour-piercing blast shell is greater than that of anti-personnel and anti-personnel blast projectiles. It is usually used in large caliber artillery, and mainly used to destroy fortifications and obstructions. It also opens up paths in the mine field and destroys fixed targets such as missile launch site, airport and fire point.
Tungsten alloy armour-piercing blast shell is composed of projectile and propellant charge, and the projectile body is tungsten alloy material. Its structure is characterized by a large chamber and a large amount of explosive. It utilizes the kinetic energy of the penetrator itself to make the warhead drill into the target and then explode, and destroys the target by shock wave, fragment and projectile. Its destruction is accomplished by the penetrating and blasting effects of projectile on the target.
As a penetrator you need either a very hard and very heavy metal as tungsten, or a very heavy and explosive metal as depleted uranium to provide enough kinetic energy. In Kuwait, after the war, they found out that the depleted uranium that was used left a deadly dust. After that discovery, the use of the depleted uranium was significantly dropped. Nowadays because of that, the use of tungsten bullets is very high. However, it is not easy to get a hold of a lot of raw tungsten because more than 80% of the world supply is from China.
